Ludvika is a world-leading center for technology, innovation, and the transition to fossil-free energy.
Hitachi Energy has built the world’s largest transformers, with voltage levels as high as 1,100 kilovolts. The transformers were sold to China, but for logistical reasons, the two enormous transformer enclosures were left behind in Ludvika. One of these transformer enclosures was moved to Sockenstugeparken, in central Ludvika, where it has been filled with an energy storage system designed to supply critical infrastructure with electricity in the event of a crisis. At the same time, Krafttanken is a proud landmark for Ludvika as the number one energy city!
The landmark was given the name Krafttanken during a festive inauguration ceremony in late 2019.
