In recent years, Ludvika Municipality has made a major investment in solar power. A solar energy hub has emerged in the city center, featuring large solar power installations at the sports arena, fire station, parish hall, and an adjacent school. Krafttanken houses a multifunctional energy storage facility that will serve as a vital resource in the event of a major failure in the national power grid. The energy storage facility consists of a battery charged with fossil-free energy, including from nearby solar power installations. Read more here about how the energy storage facility can supply electricity to critical community functions:
. The concept is applicable to other municipalities with nearby hydroelectric power plants and has therefore attracted significant interest both nationally and internationally.
The energy storage facility in Ludvika will be part of a local microgrid and will also serve as a test facility for active energy management. Since the facility’s central location is crucial to its operation, it is also well-suited to include charging stations for electric vehicles, which can draw fossil-free electricity from the energy storage facility.
The video below was recorded during a webinar hosted by High Voltage Valley. During the webinar, you’ll hear project managers, academics, and other experts discuss this innovative initiative and answer questions about it.
The moderator is Johanna Barr from Power Circle.
Participants: Lisbeth Söderling, High Voltage Valley; Fredrik Brändström, Swedish Energy Agency ;Wilhelm Jacobsson, Hitachi Energy; Magnus Speychal, Sweco; Arne Löv, VB Energi; Arne Adolfsson, Ludvika Municipality; Jan-Olof Olsson, Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) ; Malin Wallenberg, VB Energi; Désirée Kroner, Dalarna University.
Work on this energy storage facility is being carried out as part of a project in collaboration between High Voltage Valley/Samarkand, the Municipality of Ludvika, Hitachi Energy, VB Energi, VB Kraft, Altpower, and Dalarna University. In this video, members of the project team discuss in more detail how the work on the energy storage facility has progressed.
