Hydropower
The world’s first commercial alternating current power transmission system was inaugurated in 1893 in the municipality of Ludvika. It was the hydroelectric power plant at Hällsjön that supplied energy to the Grängesberg mines. The hydroelectric power plant is still in operation. With a steel pipe approximately 450 meters long and a head of 44 meters, today’s power plant is fed with water from Lake Vasselsjön.
VB Kraft, which owns the Hällsjön hydroelectric power plant, is a municipally owned company that operates a total of 11 power stations and 42 dams in the headwaters of the Kolbäcksån and Arbogaån rivers. Wind Power
There are 33 large wind turbines in Ludvika Municipality, 20 of which are located in the Fjällberget-Saxberget area, which is designated as an area of national interest for wind power.

Solar Energy
Ludvika Municipality has made a major investment in solar energy. Today, one of Dalarna’s largest solar power plants is located at the Sports Hall in the city center. Adjacent to this facility are additional publicly owned installations at locations such as the fire department, a parish hall, and a school.
